Lemongrass essential oil uses are wide and varied. This amazing oil with the Latin names of Cymbopogon citratus or Cymbopogon flexuosus has been used throughout history for a variety of purposes, including reducing inflammation, relieving headaches, improving dandruff, and easing indigestion.
Native to islands in Southeastern Asia, lemongrass is a tall grass that grows in tropical climates.
Lemongrass essential oil is extracted from the leaves and stalks of the lemongrass plant.
The fresh, citrusy scent of its essential oil can be used aromatically or applied to hair or skin in a carrier oil.
It has many other potential health benefits, as well.

Lemongrass Essential Oil Uses and Benefits
Lemongrass essential oil is often used as natural remedy to assist in healing wounds and to help prevent infection.
A study conducted in 2010 showed that Lemongrass essential oil was effective against a variety of drug-resistant bacteria, including those that cause those bacteria that cause blood, skin and intestinal infections as well as pneumonia.
Fungi are organisms such as yeast and mold. An older study (from 1996) found that Lemongrass oil was an effective preventative against four different types of fungi, including the fungus that cause ringworm, athlete’s foot and “jock itch”.
The study found that the solution must be at least 2.5 percent Lemongrass essential oil in order to be effective against these fungi.
More recent studies, however, have continued to show the effectiveness of Lemongrass essential oil uses for fungus. These include a 2013 research study that showed Lemongrass essential oil may be effective against pityriasis versicolor, a fungus that causes small, scaly patches on the skin (this is also known as tinea versicolor).
In a study done in 2014, researchers evaluated the in vitro effects of Lemongrass essential oil on specific fungi including, Candida albicans (which causes yeast infections and thrush) and C. tropicalis, and Aspergillus niger. The study found promising results in the anti-fungal properties of Lemongrass essential oil.
“In addition, topical application of LGEO in vivo resulted in a potent anti-inflammatory effect, as demonstrated by using the mouse model of croton oil-induced ear edema. To our knowledge, this is the first such report to be published. The topical application of LGEO at doses of 5 and 10 µL/ear significantly reduced acute ear edema induced by croton oil in 62.5 and 75% of the mice, respectively. In addition, histological analysis clearly confirmed that LGEO inhibits the skin inflammatory response in animal models.”
A further study on Lemongrass essential oil uses, this one conducted in 2015 (International Journal of Nanomedicine), corroborated that Lemongrass essential oil may be effective inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans, the fungus that is behind yeast infections, as mentioned above.
Chronic inflammation is believed to be behind many health problems including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis and even cancer.
Lemongrass essential oil contains a chemical constituent called citral, an anti-inflammatory compound.
A 2014 research study, showed that oral administration of Lemongrass was powerfully effective in its anti-inflammatory abilities on mice with carrageenan-induced edema on their paws. In addition, further analysis clearly confirmed that the constituents in Lemongrass essential oil inhibits the skin inflammatory response in animals. A promising treatment for humans.

There has been some promising research on Lemongrass essential oil uses for its antioxidant power.
The authors of a study conducted in 2011 found that Lemongrass essential oil as a mouthwash had strong antioxidant properties in three different concentrations of the mouthwash with Lemongrass essential oil.
The study included 40 participants, including some with gingivitis or gum inflammation.
It sounds like it is time to add Lemongrass mouthwash to my regular dental hygiene routine.
Another study, performed in 2015, showed that Lemongrass oil was effective in hunting down free radicals in the body.
The Lemongrass essential oil benefits keep piling up, right? But wait, there’s more!
For years Lemongrass essential oil has been used as a folk remedy for a variety of digestive problems including from upset stomachs to gastric ulcers.
Researchers, a 2012 study, decided to test out this folk remedy and found (at least in mice), that Lemongrass essential oil helped prevent gastric ulcers.
Lemongrass is also a common ingredient in herbal teas and supplements for nausea. Although most commercial herbal products use dried lemongrass leaves, using the essential oil for aromatherapy provides similar benefits.

Most of us are aware that having high cholesterol increases your risk of heart attack and stroke, so it is important to keep your cholesterol levels in check.
Lemongrass essential oil has been traditionally used to treat high cholesterol and manage heart disease.
A study conducted in 2007 looked at its effectiveness for these conditions. They study showed that Lemongrass essential oil significantly reduced the cholesterol in rats who had been fed a high cholesterol diet for two weeks.
The effectiveness was dose dependent. The positive effects of the Lemongrass oil changed when the dose was changed.

A 2007 study indicated that Lemongrass essential oil lowered blood sugar levels and lipids while lowering HDL (the bad) cholesterol in rats. The rats were given an oral dose of Lemongrass essential oil for 42 days. The doses ranged from 125 to 500 milligrams.
9. Lemongrass Essential Oil May Help to Relieve Pain
Since inflammation is often linked to pain, the citral in lemongrass essential oil may help ease pain as it relieves inflammation.
According to a 2017 study on conducted on patients with rheumatoid arthritis, using Lemongrass essential oil topically degreased their pain levels from 80 percent to 50 percent within thirty days.
I occasionally use it on my joints to help to relieve arthritis (osteo) pain with moderate effectiveness.
High blood pressure is often caused by high levels of stress. Numerous studies have already shown that aromatherapy can reduce stress and anxiety. (combining massage with aromatherapy can enhance the results).
A study from 2015 reviewed the effects of Lemongrass essential oil and Sweet Almond Massage Oil during a massage.
Participants who received a massage using the oil combination once a week for three weeks had lower diastolic blood pressure than those in the control group. Systolic blood pressure and pulse rate were not affected, however.
A study from 2015 published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine showed that even short exposure to Lemongrass essential oil offers anti-anxiety benefits.
Three groups of participants inhaled Lemongrass essential oil, Tea Tree oil, or distilled water. Immediately after they inhaled, each participant took a color and word test intended to serve as an anxiety prompt.
Those who inhaled the Lemongrass essential oil had a reduction in anxiety and tension and were quicker to recover from the anxiety than those who used the tea tree oil or water.
Lemongrass essential oil contains a chemical constituent called Eugenol. Eugenol is thought to prevent blood platelets from “clumping” together. It also releases serotonin which is a hormone that regulates mood, sleep appetite and cognitive functions.
Researchers in Australia conducted a study using native Australian Lemongrass and found that the Lemongrass essential oil may relieve pain caused by headaches and migraines. The researchers believe that the eugenol in Lemongrass oil has similar effects to aspirin.
Another study, published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, in 2011, corroborated with the Australian study on the effects of eugenol on headaches. Both studies found that Lemongrass, due to its chemical constituent eugenol had a significant effect on participants headache pain.
12. Lemongrass Essential Oil May Help to Avoid Insect Bites
There are numerous studies showing the effectiveness of Lemongrass essential oil for preventing insect bites. One study showed it effectiveness against mosquito bites (which may carry malaria).
You can use it topically (mixed with a carrier oil or “neat”) or ingest in a capsule to prevent bug bites.

13. Lemongrass Essential Oil May Help Purify the Air
As mentioned previously, Lemongrass essential oil is thought to be highly effective as an antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant agent. Those properties, alone, make Lemongrass essential oil a good choice for purifying the air.
Additional studies, such as this one, have pointed to the effectiveness of Lemongrass essential oil for cleaning the air and neutralizing unwanted odors.
It is a top choice in our home when having company or when anyone may be feeling sick.
14. Lemongrass Essential Oil May Help Reduce Dandruff and Improve Hair Health
If you weren’t already convinced of Lemongrass essential oil benefits and uses, this one should convince you. Who doesn’t love healthy hair?
In a 2015 research study, researchers found Lemongrass essential oil to be significantly helpful in fighting dandruff.
Researchers gave subjects with dandruff a hair tonic containing either lemongrass essential oil (Cymbopogon flexuosus) or a placebo twice a day. After two weeks, those using the lemongrass hair tonic showed a significant decrease in dandruff compared to the placebo group.
How to use Lemongrass Essential Oil
There are several different ways to use Lemongrass essential oil. First, you can use it aromatically by inhaling directly from the bottle or adding to a diffuser. Another aromatic way to use Lemongrass essential oil would be to add a few drops to a cotton ball or on an aromatherapy bracelet and breathe in the aroma.
Second, you can use it topically by adding up to 12 drops of Lemongrass oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil. Then simply mix into a warm bath or massage into your skin.
